Helen's Brownies


Adapted from a World War II Spry shortening recipe.

Time: 45 mins.

1/2 cup Crisco shortening

2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate

1/2 cup sifted flour

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

2 eggs, well beaten

1 cup sugar

1 cup nuts, coarsely cut, if desired

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Grease and flour an 8-inch-square baking pan.

Put Crisco and chocolate together in a small ovenproof dish; set dish in preheating oven for five minutes.

Remove chocolate mixture from oven carefully and stir to dissolve remaining solids; allow mixture to cool.

Add baking powder and salt to sifted flour and sift again.

In a large bowl, beat eggs with a fork until light,.

Add sugar and chocolate mixture to the bowl and mix well with a spoon.

Add flour, vanilla, and nuts (if using), and mix well.

Pour batter into greased and floured pan and smooth to edges.

Bake for 35 minutes
