Sis' Thumbprint Cookies


YOU choose how these delicious jam-filled cookies will taste


1 cup shortening

2 cups flour

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 egg

1/2 tsp. salt

3 Tbs. milk

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. vanilla

1 1/2 cups very finely chopped nuts

Jelly or jam, any flavor

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Cream shortening and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer.

Add egg and beat to incorporate.

Add salt, baking powder, vanilla, and flour; mix well.

Add milk and mix well.

Place dough in a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap or a plate, and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Roll chilled dough into 1-inch balls, then roll the balls into the finely chopped nuts.

Set balls two inches apart on a cookie sheet.

Depress the center of each ball with your thumb.

Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes.

Immediately upon taking the cookies out of the oven, fill the center depressions with any flavor of jelly or jam you prefer, or use more than one flavor.

Remove the cookies to a rack to cool.
